The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

Wow, love this theme! Love this cake! I want to have another baby just so I can have a 1st birthday w/ this theme! JUST KIDDING!! Don't love it that much! ;)
But really, how cute is this theme???
The smash cake....

And I couldn't resist planning a Very Hungry Caterpillar party! This is totally a theme I would choose if I could do my girl's first birthday all over again!!
.

First off, check out these invitations!!! So clever and so CUTE! Source
And I love how the food is set up on these parties. Your menu idea is already chosen for you b/c you can just use all the food the caterpillar ate on his journey through out the book. (just don't forget to poke little holes in every piece of food like the caterpillar did in the book!!) Its all in the details!!Check these parties out. HERE and HERE
And what a cute balloon caterpillar decoration! I love it!
The decorated sugar cookies are so cute!!!
And for a party favor/activity, equip your quests with little butterfly nets. You can have a caterpillar/butterfly hunt like THIS party did. Make caterpillars out of pom poms or egg cartons cut up and painted. Or you could even have a candy/food hunt...the kids could be little caterpillars on a quest for food!!! The possibilities are endless. So much fun!
And last, but not least...check out ESTY.com ** for this adorable caterpillar photo prop to display pics of your growing caterpillar! I love it!

**Disclosure: Etsy is dangerous and very addictive!!! Consider this a warning..if you haven't explored Esty yet then you're in for an expensive treat!! ;)

Sienna's Sweet Shoppe

This cake is for a neighbor of ours whose ADORABLE daughter, Sienna celebrated her 1st birthday yesterday with a Sweet Shoppe party. She is such a cute little girl and I really hope this cake made her smile!!

It turned out to be a very popular cake in my house.

First, Bailey walked in from school and took one look at this cake (and I was only 1/2 way done) and said,

"That looks GREAT! I WANT THAT ONE TO BE MY BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!"
Long thinking pause...

"That is my birthday cake, right?
"Sorry sweetie. Your birthday is in April...not this weekend."

(I have to remind her every now and then that these cakes aren't for us)

Later, Olivia, my candy feen, basically said the same thing. Only using less words and a lot more action! I turned my back on her for 30 seconds (bad move). She climbed up on the counter while I was taking the trash out and took a big BITE out of one of the lollipops I had made!! Grrrrrrrr!!! Thank God I hadn't put them on the cake yet! This is the first offense that either one of my girls have had against my cakes. They're usually very well behaved around them but Liv couldn't help herself with this one!!! Guess I can't let my guard down anymore. :(

So there is one less lollipop on this cute 3 tier, but I don't think we missed out too much!!!

By the way, it was made to match this adorable Sweet Shoppe invitation. What cute invitation huh?!?!! It made for easy inspiration for this cake!

I thought a lollipop would make an appropriate smash cake...
.
And here are a couple picture's of the candy buffet Amy created for her little girl's party. She made this sign herself!! Such a cute display!!!!!

Cake disaster!

People always ask my why I don't do wedding cakes. My answer is always the same...TOO STRESSFUL!! I'm terrified of encountering a huge cake disaster, one that would say, demolish a cake! And then having bridezilla take her vengeance out on me...its just not worth it.

I've been doing cakes for over a year and this weekend I had my first major cake disaster. :( I was able to recover from it somewhat painlessly, but I was reminded of why I have come to my decision. I don't think I could have recovered so easily if it were a 5 tier wedding cake!! EEK!

So anyway, here is my cake disaster...it was bound to happen one of these days!! :(

Here is the before....

A Cookie monster cake.
Happy Guy. Just minding his own business, eating his cookies and crossing his eyes.
.

He even brought along his little brother, aka the smash cake...

Things were going great. My girlfriend from high school came to pick him up, she loved him.

We chit chatted and then said our goodbyes...

About an hour later I got this. A picture in my email. :(

Poor cookie monster! We're not sure what happened. She promised she didn't slam on the brakes and/or flip her vehicle on the way home. My guess is he was not happy with the cookies I supplied him with and his monstrous appetite pressured him into eating the lower tier. :( He HAD to have it!

Its all pretty ironic if you think about it. Violently tearing into anything that resembles a cookie is what he is known for.

Disaster.

So I had Cole's mommy bring Cookie monster back home so we could have a good "talkin' to"!

A couple hours later he was repaired and honestly I think better looking than even before. I cannot believe it but I forgot to take an after-after picture. I have the before, the after, but no after-after picture! :( I'll have to get one sent to me, because like I said he repaired and better than ever!

Luckily this fell on the night before the party so there was plenty of time to repair! If it happened on the day of the party there would be little to no hope of anyone forgiving Cookie Monster for his terrible impulses!!

And THAT is why I don't do wedding cakes!

Luckily this all happened on a night that Bailey had her BFF Katelyn over for a spend the night party. The girls kept each other entertained while I tried to salvage what was left of the cake. In between baking and re-icing the lower tier of this cake we played beauty shop up in my bathroom. "Beauty Shop" consists of painting nails and doing each other's hair. "Doing" hair to these 4 1/2 year olds means you brush, spray perfume, body spray, glitter, lotion, hair mousse, detangler, hair spray... pretty much anything you can find in the bathroom you put in the other one's hair. As long as it doesn't make your hair fall out or change its color, its fair game. So after they were done doing each other's hair they did Olivia's.

Not sure which disaster is worse...Cookie Monster or Olivia's hair?!?!!?

Olivia at the Beauty Shop....

What a crazy night!! Friday nights certainly look a little different to me these days! :)

BAD BAD Cookie monster!!!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Cake

How cute is this theme for a one year old!?! I love it!!!

A better view of the characters...

And it of course was topped off with a pizza b/c teenage mutant ninja turtles LOVE their pizza!! ;)

Mr Finn's smash cake...

And now, a few party ideas for your TMNT party!!!

Gotta have PIZZA on the menu!! It is a staple in the TMNT's diet!
To the right is the tissue paper poms. Red, orange, blue and purple to represent the different turtle characters. And then of course lots of green!
Is that turtle watermelon not the cutest!!?! I love it. Carve your hollowed out watermelon to look like a turtle and fill it with fruit salad!
Add little toy rats all around the house for decor. These turtles live in the sewer so rats are definitely invited to this party!
Check out Oriental trading for some toy ninja swords to pass out as party favors. Add in some TMNT masks and it will be great entertainment during the party!
For a cute and EASY craft for little hands check out this pizza craft from Family Fun.
Next is more party favors! Slime would be a great one (again b/c they live in the yucky sewers) And then for cute drinking cups to dress up your table check out these trash can cups.
Directly below the cups is some colorful candy that would be perfect to match the TMNT colors! Pictured here are Twizzlers and Skittles.
And then beside that...last but not least a great table scape idea! Replace the yellow strip of fabric with purple and you have all the colors you need to complete a TMNT table!

Beach Cake

This one makes me smile. :) Made for an adorable little 1 year old baby girl. It took HOURS to create all the little details on this cake it was well worth it b/c it all came together perfectly. Made to match a Lilly Pulitzer beach party theme. So cute!!!!
