Easter Cake Stand...could that really be made from the dollar store?

The idea came from Jen at Tater Tots and Jello and the tutorial is in her post here. Now we used a glass plate and a glass candle stick and then added a little crepe paper ruffle (because Dot and I just can't seem to get enough of crepe paper these days...would it be weird to dress our kids in it? or is that a little junk in the trunk?)
And what is it about Easter time that makes carrots so endearing? If only I could convince my children....
Did I mention that we have a small love affair with crepe paper right now. I mean who knew that twisting that cheap crinkly paper from birthdays past could amount to a little gem of a flower or a ruffle of color there? I mean seriously people go get some crepe paper if you haven't used it lately!! So once again, our thanks to the Tater Tots genius who thought of turning a lowly dollar store tray and candle stick into a snobbish little tray you really can make for any Holiday!!

DIY Cake Stands from the Dollar Store

Tater Tots and Jello is one of my favorite websites to find all sorts of easy and inexpensive DIY tutorials and ideas. And Jennifer's latest project is definitely one to pass along - a DIY Cake Stand tutorial using Dollar Tree items and at only $3.00 or so per stand, I'd say that's quite a deal!

Cake stands are so versatile, and can be used in a myriad of ways. I love the way they look on a dessert table, raising the level of various foods to catch the eye and add a little interest to an otherwise linear display. And with the trend for symmetry on party tables, you can't beat $6.00 for two matching serving pieces.

Using a chevron pattern template that she made, Jennifer took enamel paints and turned her Dollar Store finds into adorable and unique dessert plates.

Can't you just imagine the versatility of these!
Paint them to match your own party theme with your own colors, and best of all, Jen includes a free download of her chevron pattern template on her blog.

After gathering up her plates, glue, paint, exacto knives and other supplies,
Jenn paints the patterns onto the dishes and then bakes them in the oven for a few
minutes to set the paint and make it dishwasher safe.

Isn't that a great idea?? If you'd like the full tutorial, just go to

And while you're there, be sure to check out this decoupage tiered stand project
that Jenn shares from last year.

And this great decoupage tray project, too

Isn't she amazing? Love a girl who can make something cute from the aisles of the Dollar Tree!
Hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Need a Fabulous Cake Stand?

I love a DIY kind of girl, and I've found some super-talented ones over at Bee in our Bonnett.

Have you ever seen a gorgeous cake plate stand in the store that You.Just.HAD.To.Have? And then you took a look at the price tag and gingerly set it back down and continued on your merry way. Well, thanks to the creative talents of the two sisters at Bee in our Bonnett, we can have our cute cake stands and save a little money, too.

Aren't these amazing?
The girls made these fabulous pedestal cake stands for their little
brother's wedding party and then styled this beautiful dessert table, too.

Using some smooth plywood.....

Some furniture legs from Home Depot......

And some trim from the Dollhouse section of the craft store (Michaels) ..... oh, yeah, and a really nice & handy husband..... they crafted these beautiful stands in no time at all.

After assembly, sanding and a little paint, the sisters added some simple white plates (Walmart) to the tops of each stand.

And created these.... beautiful, versatile.... and they even show you how to store the stands easily.

What a GREAT idea! Thanks Bee in our Bonnett!
Please visit their blog for more detailed instructions and other fun ideas.
