Funky Fun 30th!!!!

This cake was made for my friend Delaine's 30th surprise party. Delaine is a super sweet, playful and fun fashionista and I think this cake matches her personality to a tee. :)

Happy 30th Delaine!!!!

Birthday time!

I've always thought of birthdays as your own personal holiday, but I guess it depends on how you celebrate them.

Mine have always been celebrated to the fullest extent...

To make a birthday special, you really just need the ones you love... But.  Dot would not be Dot if I didn't think you needed a lot more than that to make a great party!  If you know me at all, you know I do a little bit for a birthday...

But today's birthday post is about party hats:  I love a good party hat, and its a trend that's on the rise right now!  You practically can't go anywhere in the blogosphere without bumping your knees against one!

NieNie made party hats for her New Years Eve party:  (So it wasn't a birthday, but wouldn't it be cute for one??!!)

Jordan at Oh Happy Day has a template and DIY guide for making your own:

Silver Spoon Scraps sells these adorable party hats on her etsy shop, in fact she made two for us!

Made by SilverSpoonScraps
Dot recently went on a girl's trip to celebrate a friend's 30th birthday, and made her the hat on the bottom right of the picture.  It was in coral and turquoise, why oh why didn't I ever take a picture of it?

St.Patrick's Round-up

{via me!}

I am tired today peeps...I need a little pep in my step. I have found some wonderful blogs with great print's and can't wait to share them with you. I have so many thoughts today, I feel like my mind is going at about 100 mph. Ever have those days? I just need to remember to breathe! My van is about to blow up, money's tight, it's cold, my boys are having one of  "those" spells, you know where their ears are numb to my voice ha! Tell me I am not the only one. Mom's are strong plain and simple. Soldier on ladies!

{ Spring Party Week } - Let's Go Fly a Kite!

"Let's go fly a kite, up to the highest height...... "

Doesn't that little tune bring back some great memories? Playing in the grass, singing and dancing without a care in the world. Well, that's exactly the idea behind one of my favorite party tables of all time from Tracey Lau. This one is pure perfection. Absolutely stunning.

Australian based Tracey Lau, a mother, event planner and photographer, created this unforgettable display for her son's 1st birthday celebration. Tracey's attention to detail is amazing, her style.... impeccable. About her party Tracey says, "So to the Kite Party, what was I thinking - I started with Blue sky and lush green grass, added in outdoors flying kites, and outdoors in the park takes me to gingham, throw in some yummy treats and this is what I ended up with…Jeremiah’s Dessert Table!"

Tracey's backdrop says it all..... carefree, fun, simple. Genius, I think.
It makes you just want to jump right into this gorgeous Spring day.

Just take a close look at some of Tracey's details: colorful candies in jars, candy bar favors wrapped in paper and embellished with a paper kite and ribbon, fondant kite cupcakes
with cloud icing, sweet kite cookies on sticks in the perfect white picket fence container,
and of course, those adorable cloud marshmallows (Tracey purchased these in Australia, but I found a great tutorial on the web if you'd like to make your own).

It's so cute, I can barely stand it!

Photobucket
The artificial grass as a tablecloth is such a nice touch. It really conveys that "running in the park" feel of the table. I love Tracey's use of a white frame to hold her caramel corn cones, too. About the frame project she says, "(My husband) replaced the glass, etc.
with MDF for me and drilled 12 holes. We then gave it another coat of
white paint so it all worked and added in legs."

And just look at those cloud food labels - So sweet! Bags of cotton candy as "fairy floss"
and drinks in the perfect sky blue color with those popular striped straws
round out this beautiful dessert table.

Tracey also made the kite invitations with scrapbook paper and some ribbon and included the wording for the invite on the back. Wouldn't every child love to get this invitation in the mail!

She says, "We couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out, and I must say Jeremiah enjoyed himself, especially his first ever taste of cake. I think he is hooked."

How wonderful!
Hard work pays off in a fabulous party to celebrate little Jeremiah's milestone birthday.

Toy Story Bed

Clever Clovers from Family Fun

Family Fun magazine has this fun recipe for St. Patricks Day that we thought
would be fun to make with the kids!  Maybe to lure the leprechauns?

Ingredients
  • waxed paper
  • 3 yogurt covered mini pretzels
  • 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
  • green icing
  • decorating sugar
Instructions
  1. To make a batch, cover a work surface with a sheet of waxed paper. For each clover, arrange three yogurt-covered mini pretzels and a pretzel section as shown.
  2. Combine 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil with 1/4 cup white chocolate chips and melt them together in the microwave according to the chips' package directions. Dab the mixture between the pretzel pieces to adhere them. Let the chocolate harden.
  3. Working with one clover at a time, pipe the edges and stem with green icing (we used a #8 round piping tip), then quickly sprinkle it with decorating sugar (we used white, light green, and dark green).
Tips:
To save sugar, sprinkle each clover on a small piece of waxed paper. After you've covered a few treats, use the paper to funnel the extra sugar back into its jar.

{ Paper Crafting Week } - Paper Rose Pomander Pinata

I just couldn't stop with 5 posts for my Paper Crafting Week -- I had to add one more in! This is such a great idea, and just simply gorgeous, that I had to include it as well.

Nicole of Tradewinds Tiaras has a brilliant idea for a homemade party pinata using paper roses. Yes, that beautiful pomander is filled with treats and goodies and, well, yes, it's about to be beaten to death by many little sugar-starved children. But it's pretty, right?

If you have the heart to create something this beautiful and then have it completely destroyed by little ones, Nicole has a wonderful tutorial on Kate Landers Events.

Nicole actually used a 24" round balloon and made a paper machie pinata herself out of newspaper and glue, but I think I would go buy a soccer or baseball pinata to make the 1st step a little quicker. Then she proceeded to make about 300 tissue paper roses to cover the ball shaped base. Here are her supplies for the roses.

Nicole uses a stapler to hold the rose together. How simple!

And the 300 roses before they were attached to the paper mache ball with hot glue.

Nicole made this pinata at her Cornish Fairy party for her daughter. This party is a STUNNER - you must go see all the details on Nicole's blog. Just take a look at her dessert table display.

And the tiered fondant cake she made.... yes, she MADE it!

What a pretty backdrop, too.

And a favorite, the sucker "topiaries" - she shows us how to make these as well.

And her sweet fabric mushrooms springing up all over the woods.

Nicole has so many amazing ideas. Be sure to visit Tradewind Tiaras for more
gorgeous photos and fabulous fairy party inspiration.

I hope you have a wonderful Saturday!

cookies and thank you's

If I had to guess I am pretty sure I would qualify as the WORST chocolate chip cookie maker ever! Every single time I make them they come out flat as pancakes and turn into bricks 10 minutes after they cool. I stumbled onto this print that just happens to have a cookie recipe I have yet to try for chocolate chip cookies. Hopefully this recipe works for me so I can share the cookies in these cute little packages. Fingers crossed.

p.s. I tried something new and added the link to the site so you can just click on the picture. Let me know if it doesn't work!
Happy Friday

Paper Crafting Week - Part 5: Party Hats

For the last day of my week-long paper crafting round up,
I wanted to show these fabulous ideas for Custom Party Hats.
Isn't this the most adorable thing? Doesn't it make you want to say, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Every little girl would feel like a princess with her very own, made-just-for-her party hat.

The fabulously creative mind of Lil' Luna deserves the credit for this one. She has a tutorial on Oopsey Daisy that shows all of us how easy it is to create a one of a kind party hat using pre-made hats and a few embellishments. Here are the basics:

Step One: Gather your materials including circular stickers such as vinyl dots or
scrapbook paper dots or even office supply colored circles, some pre-made party hats,
crepe paper, glitter, glue, hot glue, etc.

Step Two: Add the circular stickers to your party hats.

Step Three: Ruffle your crepe paper fringe with a sewing machine.

Step Four: Add some fringe to the top of your hat as well.

Step 5: Make a paper rosette from scrapbook paper.

Step 6: Add a glittery birthday girl number and that's it! Ca-ute!!

Birthday Girl has another tutorial for a simplified version of a party hat.
She uses 12"x12" scrapbook paper for the hats which is perfect for matching any party theme.

This one involves a little sewing like the first example, but if you don't have a machine, I think you could cut the crepe paper into fringe and glue a few layers to the bottom of the hat, too.

Materials: 12x12 scrapbook paper, cone hat for a pattern,
1 roll of crepe paper, double-sided tape and elastic cord.

She shows us how tocut a pattern for the hat, and then ruffle and fringe the crepe paper edge.

Just a few simple steps to fabulous!

And before I go, I had to show another adorable version by Art Glitter Blog.
This one has me swooningand wishing my girls were little again.
Can you believe how cute this is?

What a fabulous week of ideas! I'm so inspired now to go into the weekend
and craft with paper -- I hope you are, too. Happy Friday Everyone!

Craft Night, Loads of Glitter, and a Tutorial!

You may not know this, but we (Dot and Glitta) host a monthly craft night that is SO FUN.  If you don't get together with some fun girls for some crafting, you should.

Really.

It's a little bit new, but its seeming to work best to provide a kit for our crafty ladies.  We tried just giving a supply list, but less people seemed to come that way.  So we started offering kits to purchase and thought we'd also provide a tutorial online.  We've also decided to make the kits available for purchase to our online readers as well.  So either email us, or buy some supplies and

get crafting!

This month's craft is this Shamrock Door Hanger (wreath, technically?):

Supplies:
About 8 ft of 16 gauge wire (we used 20 and it ended up being a little flimsy)
About 9 ft of a cheap ribbon for wrapping around the wire
About 75 large clothespins
Can of lime green spray paint
Green glitter (about 2 oz worth)
Spray Adhesive
25 yard spool of 6" green tulle

Embellishment Supplies:
Green buttons
Book pages
White cupcake wrappers,
green fabric
burlap
wire

This kit is available to purchase (with the embellishment supplies) for $25, minus the spray paint and spray adhesive, just email us with an order at holidaysnob@gmail.com

Step 1: Spray paint your clothespins.  I kept them all together the way they were packaged because I was  painting literally thousands of clothespins.  It covers pretty well, but if you're a perfectionist, spread them out.

Step 2: Spray a small group of clothespins with spray adhesive, then immediately glitter.  Then spray with a second coat of adhesive, which works pretty well to seal the glitter on.  (Better than not spraying, but Dot's house was still covered in green glitter after craft night!)

Note:  You won't be able to salvage leftover glitter because of the second coat of adhesive (even if you were to move the clothespins before spraying, you'd lose more glitter from your clothespins).

Stacks of glittered clothespins in bundles of 75:

Step 3:  Shape wire into clothespin shape.  Sorry, there's no pattern, but it's just 3 circles and a stem, right? Ours is about 20" wide and 16" tall.

Step 4:  Wrap shamrock frame in ribbon.  This helps bulk up the frame and the clothespins adhere.  Start with glue-gunning the ribbon to itself around the stem and then occasionally as you go to keep the ribbon in place.  This step may work better if you cut the ribbon between the stem and then between each leaf.  Otherwise it's hard to secure it strictly in shape.

Step 5:  Cut Tulle into 14" lengths (approximately).  We used this method from Treasures For Tots, that's really for making tutus.  But works well when you just need a bunch of equal lengths of tulle.

Step 6:  Knot the tulle around your frame.  The tulle sticks out best if you knot it like this:

Leave enough room between each knot to be able to use your clothespins.  We didn't put tulle around the stem, just clothespins.  Here's one finished product:

We don't have a tutorial for the embellishments, we just kind of layered some fun things and used wire to attach the "Lucky" label and hot glue for the flowers.

One crafter's idea was to pin the tulle down, in even rows, using the clothespins to hold it.  It made a cute ruffled look.

Here's another crafter's take: Lucky label in the middle!  Cute...

Another crafters take (brilliant) on the flowers.  We loved these!  Dot needs to fix the example wreath now...

And a collage of the craft night.  Those strawberries in the bottom left picture were TO. DIE. FOR.  And they were just regular strawberries with some type of cream cheese topping (like fruit dip?) piped onto the tips.  I don't know the recipe, but that particular crafter better attend every month!
