Fun with our Cousins...

You know, some of my favorite memories of growing up were the times I spent with my cousins. Maybe it's because they were all younger than me -- there was definitely alot of idol worship going on -- and that was great for me considering that I only had an older sister (who loved to torture me -- Haley, remember the toe pinching on my calves -- that REALLY hurt!!!) Anyway, I was so happy that Jack & Cooper were coming to stay with us this week. It seems like when all of our kids were younger, they saw each other alot more. Now that they're in school, and sports teams, and other activities -- well, it just seems like life gets in the way of making the 6+ hour drive a priority.

So we've spent the week at art camp again, playing on the trampoline & swingset, going to get snow cones, eating out everyday, going to the pool everyday, playing on the waterslide, and all the rest of the fun we've had. It's been great! My kids are so lucky to have cousins so close to their own ages. I hope they'll stay close for the rest of their lives. And I have to say, they've ALL been really good. And little Jacob is having the time of his life with his new "big brothers."

I Belong in the Year...

I took this quiz today which is supposed to describe me as a person and tell me what time period I should be living in... Here are the results... What do ya think??

You Belong in 1960

You are a free spirit with a huge heart. Love, peace, and happiness rule - oh, and drugs too.

Click above link "what year do you belong in" to take the quiz and find out your year... I think they pegged me right on, except of course, for the drug part. Heck, I barely even take Advil when I need it!

Auburn Cheer Camp

Today was the final day of Madison's cheer camp. It's so hard to believe she started going to the camp the summer we moved here when she was 4. She's continued going every year and this is our 6th summer here! That's almost impossible for me to comprehend.

She had a lot of fun learning the dances and the cheers. And it was even more fun this year because one of her best friends, Anna Grace was right beside her. But I think she enjoys getting to know the older cheerleaders more than anything else. She can't wait for them to babysit (and neither can I!!!)

Here are a few photos of the day... (if the slide show stops, click the X)

Loyal, thoughtful, trustworthy, empathetic, faithful to God, encouraging, so very optimistic, fun, funny, great mom, terrific wife, fantastic dancer, and even a little wacky which makes you all the more fun! I am so glad God brought you into my life, and thank you for helping me through my own personal struggles recently. I hope you have a great birthday, even though you can't spend it with all of us! We'll celebrate when you get back! Love Ya!

Eric's Email

So Jonathan comes to me this morning and says, "Hey, look at this." He hands me his phone and there's an email from Eric saying, "Hey guys, count me in for the trip. But only if I have first dibs at sleeping with Jonathan."

At first I'm a little confused -- a little worried even... (it was very early, you know)... Eric insists on sleeping with Jonathan???? That's weird. But then, my brain starts to warm up and I start remembering...

Oh, yeah, I seem to recall something about a skunk. I remember now... It was that white water rafting trip. The time they rented that shack of a place in Tennessee and walked in to find the most hideous smell... the smell that sent them all running back outside... It was that skunk that died under the house...

Oh yeah, I remember now. All of the guys were loading up to go on the road for a guys weekend...

Oh yeah, Eric and Jonathan couldn't even sleep because the smell was so bad... That's right... They took the mattress outside in the 40 degree weather and slept together on the deck...

Oh yeah, it seems like there was something about Bill, too. That's right... He was so grossed out that he couldn't sleep either... oh, yeah, I remember hearing about him sleeping in my car all night...

So Eric wants to sleep with Jonathan again... It was all the talk around here for a few weeks after the trip last year. Still, I'd think that after their experience last fall they wouldn't even want to go again. But I guess that's a bunch of guys for ya. They're never going to miss an opportunity to drink beer, play poker, tell dirty jokes -- you know, the whole "male bonding" thing... even if it does mean their olfactory nerves are shot and they all come home smelling like a SKUNK!

Corks 'n Canvas...

Tonight a few of us went to the new "in" thing... It's called Corks 'n Canvas... in other words, "open the corks, pour a glass, and then do your best to paint the canvas in 2 hours or less." It was actually alot of fun. And it was very interesting for me. The idea is to follow the instructors directions and end up with a "masterpiece" in a very short period of time. Well, that was a little hard for me because it was a completely different approach to painting than I regularly take, but I thought I'd learn a little from going against my own preconceived way of doing things. Everyone did a great job -- even people who had never painted before did well enough to be proud and have a painting good enough to hang. Thanks Julee for organizing it. Now we'll all have the exact same painting in our house - oh well! Here's a photos of the night...

Rebecca, Julee, Jodi, Elizabeth and me before the painting began

Wait, what is he saying??? Oh, I don't know... I'm just gonna do it my own way...

Our 2 hour masterpieces...
I HAD A GREAT TIME GIRLS!!!

Photoshop practice

I've been playing around in photoshop, learning more about the intricacies of photo editing. Here are some shots I've been working on... before and afters...

This is the "Before" picture (taken straight from the camera)

This was after cropping, color desaturation and maintaining blue eyes

This is after background extraction and working with various artistic effects

This is with more artistic effects and color dodging

This is the original taken straight from the camera

This is after keeping eyes blue and applying half intensity of black and white to photo -- looks a lot like hand-tinting a black and white photo

Let me know what you think -- they do look better when they're blown up to a full screen size, but my blog won't let me make them any larger (if you double click on the photo it does blow them up to an enormous size).

Happy Father's Day JP!!!

Thanks Jonathan for being such a great dad. You are always the life of the party around here -- the kids love all your craziness, your silly dances, all of their nicknames, and all the fun games you make up with them. And thank you for working so hard to give us everything we could possibly need. We are lucky to have you -- Love You!

Night out with the gang...

Click the X if the slide show stops

Now all of our husbands know why we love Stacy sooooo much!!!! Last night we all went out to Mikata, and she, of course, turned it on, was completely in her element -- on stage, if you will. There is no other way to say it -- She is HILARIOUS! We had so much fun -- you'd think the chef's at Mikata would be the entertainment with all the fire and tricks and volcanos, but no, Stacy showed them all up. From her infamous rendition of the Happy Birthday song (this time dedicated to Holly & Ronnie -- both have birthdays on the 22nd) to her silly "mosquito" song where she made us all yell out "whack it off" at the appropriate time, to trying to get Lee, the waitress to sing like her ("back of your throat, Lee, ggggrrrrrrr!"), Stacy made the night. Even the college kids sitting beside us were laughing and I'm sure thinking, "Wow, they're really a lot of fun" (or maybe more like, "I hope we're that much fun when we're old like they are!"). Thanks again, Stac! We love you!

The new obsession...

Yes, I know, you've been bored with my blog over the last couple of days. No updates, no new stuff. I've been a little slack I'll admit. But it was for a good cause... I've found a new hobby -- digital scrapbbooking. I've learned so much in the last few months about designing a website and working in Photoshop, so the obvious next step was going digital and I'm so excited about it. I've come to find that there is an enormous amount of scrapbooking stuff you can download FREE from the internet, and like all new hobbies for me, it's become a little obsessive, a little all-consuming. And although I know it's taken too much time away from my kids, in the end it's going to be so worthwhile. They're going to love all the pages I'm going to design for them. In fact, after you make the pages digitally you can upload them to a site like Shutterfly and they will bind them into a hardcover book. So the plan is to start with Jacob because he's the youngest (and my memories are the freshest) and then go back to do each of the girls. Like I said I'm so excited!

And that brings me to the next topic. I know I tend to use this blog to vent about the frustrations of being a stay at home mom of three very spirited children, but I think you all also know that it's really all in jest -- a way to just laugh at all the craziness and laugh at myself. I know they drive me to the brink at times, but really, I also know how lucky I am... lucky to be able to stay at home with them, lucky to have them in the first place, lucky to have absolute unconditional love for the first time in my life. These children have changed my life in ways I never dreamed possible, and like all of you, I love my kids more than I could ever possibly express in words. They really are my whole life.

So I'd like to take this time to compliment them and tell you all how good they've been this week (even with mommy being a little strung out, staring blankly into the computer and not spending nearly enough time with them). Macy has been so helpful with her brother, she has played at home with him, tried to teach him his ABC's, read to him, gotten popsicles for him from a freezer he can't reach, and even let him sleep with her in her room -- she loves him dearly and I know she is going to make such a great mom one day -- she just has that gift. And Madison has been a little kinder to me (shocking, I know), also helped at times with her brother, raced with him outside in his Lightning McQueen car, played nicely with her friends, and most of all, she did a great job helping out with the little kids at the AUMC bible school. I am so proud of both of them. And, yes, like I always say, we have our moments, but they really are fantastic kids and I probably don't say that enough.

To my light(Macy), my spirit(Madison), and my joy(Jacob)... I want you to know that you are the most precious gifts mommy could have ever received and I thank you for choosing me to be your mommy. I LOVE YOU!!!!

Jacob and his "peanut"

Jacob woke up this morning with one sooooggggy diaper! It was so loaded down that his little crack was showing... I think it was about as full as a diaper can be without completely disintegrating. So, I thought I'd take the opportunity to get a picture of that cute little bottom. Here it is...

After the photo opp, I took off the totally useless diaper and of course, Jacob, like any testosterone-ridden male, reaches down to touch that mysterious place that is always locked up tight under cotton padding and a little velcro and he says with a huge smile on his face, "MOMMA, MY PEANUT SUUUUURRRE IS BIG!"

My friend questionnaire...

My sweet friend, Julee, seen in the photo to your left (who is convinced that she only has one "good" side so she gets a permanent crick in her neck every time a camera is near) is the only one of my friends who is a blog-addict like me. She has helped me see the error of my ways in not documenting all the precious, crazy moments of my life raising 4 children -- oops, I mean, 3 children and a husband. She has been there with me through every obstacle, frustration and triumph of this new hobby in the blogosphere. Thanks Julee!!! She emailed me with a quiz, I thought I'd share it and my answers with you all...

1. Do you like blue cheese? Not especially.

2. Have you ever smoked? Unfortunately, yes.

3. Do you own a gun? No, but my husband has enough for the both of us.

4. What flavor do you add to your drink at sonic? I pretty much just drink water -- all the time.

5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments? I guess it depends on what kind of doctor it is.

6. What do you think of hot dogs? I think they're disgusting, even with chili, onions & cheese to mask their awfulness.

7. Favorite movie? THE NOTEBOOK!!!! I start crying 10 minutes into it at the ferris wheel scene and I don't stop til the glorious end.

8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning? Water

9. Can you do push ups? Nope, don't really want to either. Well, I guess if there were a chocolate chip cookie beneath me, I might be willing to do a push up for it.

10. What's your favorite piece of jewelry? My engagement ring.

11. Favorite hobby? Don't have just one -- painting canvases, decorating, painting walls, photography, blogging, anything that challenges me

12. Do you have A.D.D.? No, but I think my husband does, and it's pretty nerve-racking -- probably more so for him, but it's not a party for me either.

13. What's one trait you like about yourself? I think, ultimately, it's my determination -- It helps me succeed at things I never imagined possible and it's gotten me through many a tough time in my life.

14. Middle name: Lea

15. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment: I love the song I'm listening to on my computer; Gosh, these doughnuts for the kids sure do look good!; How can the house be this messy -- the maid was just here Thursday!

16. Name 3 things you bought yesterday: Makeup, a bathing suit, and a necklace -- I had a "pamper mommy" day

17. Name 4 drinks you regularly drink? Water, water, water and french martini's.

18. Current worry? Surviving the summer outnumbered by my children.

19. Current hate right now: Only one??? Gosh, that's hard -- I guess that all the plants I spent so much money on are dead.

20. Favorite place to be? Asleep! No, just kidding, maybe on a rollercoaster.

21. How did you bring in the New Year? Are you joking? I can barely remember what I did yesterday!

22. Where would you like to go? Eventually, heaven. But right now, ITALY!!!!

23. Name two people who will complete this: I would say Julee, but it came from her so I think that might be considered cheating! Holly & Tamara.

24. Do you own slippers? Yes, but I never wear them. You know Jonathan thinks my toes are my best feature, so I don't tend to cover them up.

25. What shirt are you wearing? A pink t-shirt.

26. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? Not really. I'm not really sure they're meant to be SLEPT on anyway.

27. Can you whistle? Nope, but I can do the splits and sing really loud.

28. Favorite color? Brown -- deep, dark chocolatey brown.

29. Would you be a pirate? What? A pirate? No. Massacres and stealing aren't quite my thing. I don't really dig the whole "matey" thing either, although I'm sure Johnny Depp could get me to convert.

30. What songs do you sing in the shower? That's interesting... I sing just about everywhere else, but never in the shower.

31. Favorite girl's name? Hmmm, I kind of like "Sheneqkwa" -- No, I really still like Macy, because it's unique. I like boy's names for girls and especially surnames for girls. Jonathan always wanted to name our boy Wilson, after his granddad -- I kept trying to get him to agree to it for the girls, but no can do. He wouldn't do it. Wilson, for a girl, is cute I think.

32. Favorite boy's name? I like surnames for boys, too. But we named Jacob after his cousin who had died in a car accident the year before he was born. That feels really good to give his name that kind of purpose and intention.

33. What's in your pocket right now? Lint

34. Last thing that made you laugh? Julee, on the phone this morning -- can't divulge why. And hey, by the way Julee, you said in your questionnaire the "Sex and the City" movie was the last thing to make you laugh. You better not have gone to see that movie without me!!!!

35. Favorite bed sheets as a child? Raggedy Ann -- I was obsessed with Raggedy Ann -- go figure.

36. Worst injury you've ever had? A completely broken heart.

37. Do you love where you live? I can't believe how lucky I am. We thought about building in so many other places! God definitely had a plan.

38. How many TV's do you have in your house? 10 - someone could break in and steal a couple and I don't even think we'd notice.

39. Who is your loudest friend? Alright, on Julee's questionnaire she answered that I was her loudest friend! That's not nice! And, hey, that's only when I'm out with ya'll because you know I have hearing issues -- I think it's all that rock 'n roll. At home, I'm rather pleasant (well, that is, until my children do something really awful, and my voice raises to levels that could scare a grizzly bear away). As for my answer, Holly used to be pretty loud, but she's reigned that in a bit, I guess it would be Shelley.

40. How many dogs do you have? None, thank goodness. Jonathan would be swollen, red and sneezing all the time. That wouldn't be all that attractive after a while.

41. Does someone have a crush on you? Absolutely! -- Jonathan all of a sudden thinks I'm pretty cute again. That's kind of nice after so many years

42. What is your favorite book? That's hard. There are lots. Recently I really loved "Pillars of the Earth" and I also got a lot out of "Eat, Pray, Love"

43. What is your favorite candy? Anything chocolate, no hard candy. Either reesee's or a hershey king-size with almonds.

44. Favorite Sports Team? Your kidding, right? AUBURN!

45. What song do you want played at your funeral? I think it would be fun for it to be a party with lots of Nickelback and 3 Doors Down blaring, and a big screen slide show of all the fun times I've had.

46. What were you doing 12 AM last night? Tossing and turning. We went to bed at about 11:30 but I couldn't get to sleep.

47. What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up? Yuck, I have to do this again? I was so warm and comfortable. But if I hurry and get up, I could get a little time to myself before the war, I mean day begins!

Art Camp for the girls... therapy for me

Therapy for the soul... that's what today was. It was the last day of art camp for the girls, and I had an appointment in Montgomery. So for the first time in 4 years, I wasn't able to make it to their art exhibition and I asked Jonathan to work in Auburn today and go for me.

Now here's the therapy part. Imagine this... I wake up, take a shower (yeah, you heard me right), get ready, put on a cute outfit (not the usual running shorts & work out bra), and still had not even seen the kids. Then, after I'm done, I go into the kitchen and they're already almost ready to go to camp... WITH NO HELP FROM ME! See, guys, it IS possible. Then Jonathan takes them to camp (get it? I don't have to do carpool!) And here's the best part... I get into his Lexus (which has awesome pick up power, unlike my SUV) and I proceed to Montgomery -- BY MYSELF, driving fast, with 3 Doors Down blaring on the stereo. I'm singing my heart out -- BY MYSELF -- with no one interrupting! It was pure bliss, I tell you.

Then the other really good part -- my appointment in Montgomery was with a make-up artist. I had a her for 2 whole hours to myself -- BY MYSELF. Told ya it was a good day! Afterward, I looked at great shoes, tried on bathing suits, bought one, bought a necklace -- again, all BY MYSELF. It was perfect. And then it ended (as all good things tend to do) -- the clock struck 12:00 and Cinderella had to run home. But at least I got to drive a different car again, listen to my tunes again, and eat a big ole cookie slice with icing all over it on my way (I know it's not all that attractive to sing with a huge hunk of chocolate chip cookie in your mouth, but remember, I was BY MYSELF so I really didn't care.)

It's not that I don't enjoy being with my kids, it's just that days like today make me a better mom. We all need a little "me" time, a little time to be pampered, and I don't know about you, but I really never get any.

So.... about "The Visual Arts Workshop for Children"... A.K.A. - art camp... The Auburn University art department hosts the camp a few different times each summer. The girls always love it. This time they learned about Mexican folk art, Mexican Oaxacan animals, printmaking, weaving, Dali inspired drawings and a few clay projects. We are so lucky to live in this town amid this great University that has such a connection to the community. Our kids are exposed to things they would never see even in a larger town. Weagle Weagle War Damn Eagle!

Anyway, the girls brought all their art home and we spent part of the afternoon displaying some of the projects prominently in their rooms. And we took a few photos. For any of you who have never been to art camp, you should check it out. There are two more sessions this summer.

Muscle shirts and mullets

So, sadists as we obviously are, Jonathan and I take the whole family to Sam's and Target a few days ago to find a chair for Macy's new desk. Three hours and $600 later (with no desk chair in tow) we leave with almost nothing that we really need and almost everything that the kids want. I think I was lucky enough to get some blackberries or something. The kids, on the other hand, got nail polish, body lotion, a few toys, Madison got three new outfits, Jacob some shirts, Macy an outfit or two, a whole bunch of preservative-ridden snack food, and even new pajamas for the munchkins. And therein lies the issue...

Jacob had a fit over these horrible, hideous Incredible Hulk pj's. He kept calling them his "bad guy" pajamas. But the worst part was that the shirt was a muscle shirt -- you know, the really ugly kind without any sleeves. I HATE MUSCLE SHIRTS ON BABY BOYS! My other "son" -- Macy -- always wants muscle shirts so she can be "cool" like a boy. And I always say absolutely not! They immediately turn a sweet, cute child into a miniature redneck. If you ever see a little kid in one, they are usually sporting some kind of mullet as well. Now I'll concede, for older boys they are alright -- still not my favorite, but acceptable. But not for little ones.

So, anyway, Jonathan thought they were awesome so, of course, we buy them. Jacob just couldn't wait to get home to wear them. And what do you know, it's been 4 days and he's barely taken them off. Even changing his diaper sends him into a raging, panicky fit. It's his new uniform. And I have to admit, they are kind of cute on him -- especially when he roars and proudly shows his muscles. But then, I've told you before, I'm a little biased when it comes to Jacob. He could be cute in anything!

Quote of the day...

Yesterday Macy came to me, bored because she couldn't find a friend to play with, and she asked for me to take her to the pool. I said, "I'm sorry, Macy. Not today. Mommy's got a lot of cleaning and laundry to do because the maid is coming tomorrow."

She looks at me a little baffled and says, "Mommy, why do we have to clean before the maid comes?"

The Dog Days of Summer... yup, I'm the dog

Summer sucks!

No, really, it only sucks part of the time. There are those times when it's great to wake up a little later, to not HAVE to be somewhere at a certain time, to not have homework and projects, to spend a little more time with the kids... Did I really just say that?

See, that's the problem, the kids. I love them, don't get me wrong. But they're driving me completely insane. And heaven help me, but it's only the second week!!! I miss my friends. I know they haven't really gone anywhere, but it's just so darn hard to get together with any of the them. We procreated WAY too much! I have this theory that we all built these houses back here because our families are so large, we had all grown out of our old ones. You're like a freak of nature around here if you've only got two kids. So, now, it's impossible to get together without a hundred kids around us at all times.

The pool sounds like a great meeting place, but my gosh it's like a Jonas Brothers concert there are so many of them! And they are all yelling and screaming and thrashing around. It's very hard to concentrate and almost impossible to have an adult "mommy" conversation. Even my ritualistic early morning phone calls to "my girls" are in danger. Either I don't have time because I'm making breakfast, cleaning up after the little heathens, or if I am on the phone, one of the kids has picked up another receiver unbeknownst to me and they're listening in. I had hoped my kids would learn about the birds and the bees later, alone with me, with the right book in hand to explain it all -- not from eavesdropping on me and my friends!

So, summer is a little tougher than I thought it would be. I had such high hopes!!! Maybe I've just hit rock bottom, and there's nowhere to go from here but up.

I'm just seeing way too much of this...

And not nearly enough of this...

And what I'd really like to see is a little more of this...

Alright, I already feel better. Venting -- it's the key to a happy mommy. Tomorrow's a new day. Hopefully I'll have a new attitude to go along with it.
