I'm about to go ballistic!!

I know we're all taught not to air our dirty laundry, but I just have to do it.

I'm losing it... no, not my mind -- my SH@!!T! My washer has been broken for over 2 weeks... with no repair man in site... and I have FIVE people in my family. FIVE people who seem to get peanut butter, mud, marker and macaroni and cheese on everything they wear, and therefore change clothes 5 times a day! And that's just MOST but not ALL of the laundry in that picture. It's taking over my house... every where I look... more laundry.

It's not easy traveling through the holidays, trying to pack here to go there over and over without a washer. I don't know how women did this before washers... I guess they just had 2 or 3 outfits and wore them til they could almost walk around by themselves.

This is when I'm reminded to be grateful for all the things we take for granted everyday. So the next time you complain about doing the laundry... remember me and this post, and be grateful that you at least have a washer. I'll pray for you that you didn't buy it at Sears because paying $1200 doesn't seem to be enough to make sure the thing actually works! This is the second time in a year that the darn thing went ca put -- and the first time it took 5 WEEKS to get it fixed!!!

Alright... I feel better now... thanks... I knew you'd be there for me.

UPDATE: Thought you'd want to know... Sears just called and said their repair man will be here at 2:21pm today........ HUH???? It's taken two weeks to come to my house to fix my washer yet somehow they are able 2 hours before to tell me the exact minute he'll be ringing my doorbell???

Christmas in Savannah

This past weekend I took the kids to see my sister and her children in Savannah. I love to visit but I always dread the 5+ hour trip in the car with the kids.... somehow a long trip turns the normally pretty well behaved munchkins into complete heathens. They fight and complain and by the end of the drive I feel like my head might start spinning around Exorcist style. So this time I had a plan... new Nintendo games... new CDs.... new Ipods.... that will definitely solve the problem.

But within 30 minutes on I-85 I knew I was wrong -- I turned one problem into another. Have you ever been forced to hear David Archuletta over & over again? If you have... you know what I'm talking about! I couldn't decide which was worse.... playing the CD on the car stereo where I had no choice but to listen to 12 or so songs that sound exactly the same... and none of them good OR letting them play the CD on their ipods where I couldn't actually hear the music, but I was instead forced to hear the kids' sing A capella, completely out of tune. I really thought I would go insane!

But all in all, they were much better than in other trips, and we had a great time once we got there.

Jacob making his own pallet on the floor... he wouldn't let anyone help him AT ALL. I can't imagine where he gets that from!

Hanging out playing bingo

Jacob found the perfect spot to go to sleep

Jack and his new bow & arrow set we got him for Christmas

Connor & Ben and their Itunes gift cards

Cooper and his new real night vision goggles.... he decided to get really dressed up to open gifts!

My mom forced the kids to all take a picture together one night....
they weren't very happy about it either...

And the outtakes...

I wish you lived closer, Haley. We really miss you guys! And thanks for all that yummy food!

Here's to Love...

Julee... this post is for you. After reading your blog today and hearing about your "Notebook" night and talking to you on the phone about how much we both love it, I decided to find a little clip for ya...

The Movie...

And it might even be better in real life...

Just thought I'd give you something to sleep on, girl... may we all be kissed like this tonight... OK... sometime in our lifetime!

Christmas morning...

So after MUCH too much begging... the kids finally talked us into letting them open a couple of presents on Christmas Eve. I actually like it that way because they have time to play without the distraction of so many new things on Christmas day -- but, of course, I don't let them know that! Then we made homemade cookies for Santa, wrote him notes and all the rest... and got those wild Indians up the stairs tucked all snuggly in their beds so Santa Clause could come to town. And boy did Santa have ALOT to do this year after those little ones were sleeping!

And believe it or not, this was the first year I didn't actually have to wake the kids up myself on Christmas morning. We've had years where by 7:30am, I'm banging pots and pans around with the video camera primed and ready to shoot those sleepy heads coming down the stairs! And other years I've physically gone up and pulled them out of bed! Not this year though. I woke up at 4:00am, probably because I couldn't wait myself, and then couldn't get back to sleep for a long while. Then they all came in our room about 6:00 screaming with excitement. They loved everything they got... I worked hard this year to just spend the money on things they really needed or I knew they would really use. And it was so nice to not have anywhere to go afterward... I stayed in my pajamas all day and played with them -- my poor neighbors were forced to hang out with me in the cul-de-sac in the late afternoon with my nappy hair, no makeup and my booties. Oh well... sorry guys.

All their loot...

My little animal lover

Just what we need... ANOTHER Webkinz!

A Rip-Stick!!! I love Santa!!!

They DO love each other

Jacob's gonna be tearing up the cul-de-sac in his new jeep

Macy's basketball game... I couldn't even get it in the playroom it was so big!

What is this, you say?? This is what a 38 year old mama of three gets in her stocking.
Sad, don't you think?

Best of all, the kids actually remembered the REAL reason for Christmas -- Macy said a prayer without any prompting, wishing Jesus a very happy birthday and thanking him for dying on the cross to save all of us. And just when I was beginning to wonder if I might need to rethink my whole strategy on parenting! Thank you, sweet girl. Mommy loves you all! Merry Christmas!

Christmas in Decatur

This past weekend we went to Decatur to celebrate Christmas with Jonathan's family. Jonathan left Friday to visit clients in North Alabama, and I left Sunday with the kids. On the way I met up with a friend that I never see anymore who lives in Clanton. I've known Bryan since 2nd grade -- we used to walk home from school together. He's such a great guy and I really missed seeing him at our high school reunion this summer. It's always so much fun to see people who've known you most of your life, but you've just lost track of -- Thanks Bryan! And the kids loved you, too!

So then, after we were loaded up on ice cream from Durbins, we drove to Decatur. It is the only time all year that all of his sisters and their families are all together. Betty, his mom, always does a fabulous job making everyone feel right at home and making enormous meals for the big crowd. I don't know how she does it!

My kids love to see their cousins -- they range from 1 year old to 26, but they all have fun playing guitar and games together, and this year Ben added a harmonica to the mix!

Amy & Alli, our nieces

Jacob loving his new Transformer helmet, mismatched pajamas (he HAD to wear them that way), his new fuzzy robe and his new crazy socks from Alaska

Macy loving her new Tech Deck Van with a "Dude" that break dances

Our nephew Andrew, Jill (his new wife) and Caleb, their nephew

Me & Jonathan

Macy playing Ben's guitar

Jennifer & Donna (Jonathan's sisters) and Jonathan with their grandmother, Mother Leva - 92 and going strong!

Madison and Jacob with their cousins, Ben and Clayton

Hanging out in the kitchen celebrating Dean's birthday

Thanks, Betty & Scott for housing and cooking for 26 for 3 days!! Merry Christmas everyone!

A Month of Fun

I love Christmas time! What a great excuse to make treats everyday! This whole month has been packed full.... here are some pictures of the fun...

Making Christmas cookies...

Wow, Mom even let me sit on the counter!

Making & painting Christmas ornaments...

And more Christmas ornaments

And, of course, making a mess!

And an even bigger mess!!

And don't forget the Gingerbread house

And Macy's favorite part -- Pajama Day at school

And class Christmas parties

And preschool Christmas programs

I couldn't believe he actually remembered his lines!

Jonathan and I are so lucky to have such wonderful kids... and despite all the craziness and shopping and wrapping and parties and making treats for all of our friends and the rest of the chaos... I love how this time of year helps us all remember just how fortunate we really are. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas... full of treasured memories that last a lifetime.

I'm a Pilgrim... uhhh... well, kind of

Why do I have an image of the Mayflower on my blog you wonder.... well, there's something I've been keeping from you. No, really, I just haven't had the time to blog about it. So I thought I'd take this day.... the day when I have to finish shopping, wrapping, cooking, doing laundry & packing before I go to Decatur tomorrow.

I have a problem, I know. I sometimes put off what I don't want to do. I don't want to do those things... I'm tired of doing those things, so I'll take a little break and fill you in on my story... My story of being a Pilgrim.

A few years ago my mom tells me that her friend, Jane, has been into genealogy for a while and she decided to do a little research on my mom's family. The more she researched, the more excited she got -- it turns out that my mom descended from Mayflower passengers. At least that what Jane said. When mom told me I thought, "that's pretty cool," but I'm also one of these people who wants to see the proof for myself.

So years go by and I pretty much forgot about it. Then this Thanksgiving when Macy was learning about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, I told her that there was a possibility that she was a descendant. She asked me to give her something that she could take to school to show her class. I got on the internet at about 5:00pm on a Friday, and the next thing I knew it was 2:00 in the morning! I know... I'm a computer addict (do you think there are CA 12 step programs out there for people like me???)

Anyway, it amazed me how much I could find on the internet about descendants of the Pilgrims, and especially about my line. And from what I can see at this point it definitely looks to be true. So I spent the next two weeks in obsession-mode, finding out everything I could on this family I never knew I had... joining every genealogical website and researching old documents, censuses, death & marriage records, etc.

Amazing... the ironies in life. Little ole me who never really even knew my mom's side of the family (she had her issues with them).... and my dad's side, well, let's just save that drama for another day... heck, I could create a whole blog just for that story! Anyway, I definitely would have never thought that I would ever be able to trace my lineage back to the 1500's in ANY way, but most certainly not to the founders of this great country.

So I guess you could say I've found a new hobby. I sent in the first application to become a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants -- they just got back with me yesterday after a month of waiting to tell me that although most certainly true, it is a "daunting task" to actually prove it. So therein lies my new mission -- proving it. I figure it will take somewhere between 2 and 5 years if not longer to do just that, but you know me... I'm a glutton for punishment especially when it comes to a big project.

I'll have to find birth, marriage and death certificates for every person from me & Jonathan up until my mom's great grandfather who was born in 1835. It seems there are already published volumes of information proving the lineage up until that point. So it sounds pretty easy... everyone knows who their great grandparents are, right??? Well, not so fast. Proving it is a whole other ballgame. Situations, for instance, where a person with the birth name of Joel begins to refer to himself as Joseph and therefore filling out every census or other document with "Joseph" makes it difficult to prove he's really Joel. And then you have to have documentation connecting Joel with his daughter "Blanche," my mom's grandmother, before there were actual birth certificates. It creates a pretty big problem... one that is only solved by actually researching through the county, probate & other records where they actually lived, which in my case is Michigan. Yikes -- that's a long way away! So someday... in between carpool, homework and laundry, I'll try to prove that I'm a Pilgrim!

Here's the lineage... if you're interested. And, oh, by the way, this is just to Myles Standish, the captain of the Mayflower. It looks like I'm actually a direct descendant of 7 people who were on the ship (although 3 of those people died within a few months of landing). Sounds crazy, I know, but there were only 49 people who lived after the first winter, so as you can well imagine, lots of people ended up marrying each other... then their children ended up marrying other Pilgrims children and on & on...

Who would've thought!

So I was playing around with the old blog tonight & noticed that someone came to my blog from a feedjit.com site about Montgomery, AL news. It pops up saying "Blogs most popular in Montgomery, AL today." And what do you know? Miss Julee, your blog was number 10, mine was number 9 and Molly's was number 8!!!

Who knew???

And we aren't even in Montgomery! Thought you guys would get a kick out of that! Now I'm going to start feeling that pressure again to blog really often and really well. Yuck!

And Julee, in that split second moment in time I may have been ahead of you on that poll, but girl, you deserve a Blogger of the Month award! You have really been posting some cute stuff this month! So glad we're all keeping up with these memories. Mommy brain used to rear it's ugly head every so often -- these days it's just the norm. I'm so glad to have this little journal to remember the good times.

And for all of you out there, go check out Julee and Molly's blogs.

Kids Say the Darndest Things...

I got this great email this week -- it's pretty cute. These are all real quotes from real kids.

JACK (age 3)was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked: 'Mom, why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?'

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six.'

STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom good night. 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.'

BRITTANY (age 4) had an ear ache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: 'How does it know it's me?'

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough.'

DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?'

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: Why is he whispering in her mouth?'

CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried when his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, 'I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?'

JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt. Concerned, James asked: 'What happened to the flea?'

TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, "Why doesn't your skin fit your face?'

The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget.... this particular Sunday sermon...'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust...' He would have continued but at that moment her very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to her and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?"

Don't ya love it???
